About This Artwork:

A reimagining of Mewtwo’s shocking and sudden first public appearance through the perspective of an old newspaper article. Mewtwo’s stylistically altered appearance mirrors the fleeting memory of eye-witness testimonies describing the scene surrounding the then never-before-seen Pokemon to the media.

[] KANTO ARCHIVES [] - THE INCIDENT AT VIRIDIAN FOREST - Nov 6th, 1999

Commuters inside Viridian Forest - a sprawling coniferous park serving as a liminal border between cities - encountered an unprecedented aerial phenomenon.

Related reports soon followed, linking multiple abducted pocket monsters to an unknown levitating humanoid with alleged “disastrous psychic abilities”. Some have even speculated it may have been a new species of undocumented Pokémon.

The being was last seen airborne heading eastbound towards Cerulean accompanied by a procession of transparent “floating spheres” containing dozens of Pokémon trapped inside. Many of which matched descriptions of missing ‘Mon reports in the area.

In its enigmatic wake, officials stumbled unto a dilapidated Pokémon trafficking ring hidden beneath the forest. The aforementioned lair led to a sophisticated underground tunneling system bridging the illegal facility to the popular Viridian City Gym.

Renowned Viridian head gym leader Giovanni was taken into custody on conspiracy to commit trafficking and racketeering in connection with the Rocket cartel organization. He was later released. All alleged charges have since been dropped.
